  • St. Mark's Square, Venice, Italy

Overlooking Piazza San Marco, the Campanile Tower from which this photo below was taken has one of the best views (or THE Best) of anywhere in Venice. This picture was recently licensed with worldwide rights for a textbook. The second shot below shows what the tower itself looks like.

  • Metro sign at Piazza di Spagna

I was standing near the Spanish Steps in Rome when I thought this metro sign with the street lamp and pastel houses in the background looked neat. This picture was recently licensed for a textbook.

  • Rue Cler, Paris

Rue Cler is one of my favorite locations in Paris. It's a cobblestone, pedestrian-only street lined with quaint little shops covering all the Parisian essentials:wine, cheese, chocolate, bread -- even a bank and post office. Most Americans, including myself, first learned of rue Cler through the excellent travel articles, books, and videos of Rick Steves.

Smithsonian Magazine has published a special issue called Smithsonian Presents: Travels with Rick Steves. It's dated Summer 2010, so it should be on the shelves for several months. My photo below of the street sign along rue Cler is on page 40 of the magazine. It's a paragraph opener printed at "spot size" which means it's "very difficult to spot"; however, it's an honor nevertheless plus they pay very well. They also sent me two free issues (aka "tearsheets") which is a virtually non-existent practice in the industry anymore. They're great people to work with.

With all of the color photography in this magazine maybe Rick Steves will start printing color pictures in all of 30+ travel books (and keep some spots reserved for me since I've used his books for nearly all of my traveling in Europe).

  • The Nightwatch by Rembrandt

I've had a single art class in my life, and it was Art Appreciation when I was in either the 7th or 8th grade. I always avoided art classes because I was leery of anyone teaching me how to draw or paint. I didn't want anyone to have any influence over what I did. (I was always "the artist" in school.) That particular class, though, satisfied a class requirement and, in retrospect, was extremely educational to me, especially regarding art history. I remember the textbook for that class being especially good for a school textbook at the time and filled with great color pictures. The Nightwatch by Rembrandt is one of the classics that everyone studies. Most of the time, it's really impossible to look at a book and realize the scale of a painting. The dimensions are in the margin of course, but it's just not the same. In the picture below you can see a group of lucky European schoolchildren who get to study the classics in person instead of from a textbook. Here, they're in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Van Gogh museum is short walk next door. When I first saw The Nightwatch in person it was large enough to surprise me. I had just not envisioned it so large. Then again, the Mona Lisa in The Louvre surprises a lot of people in regards to how small it is. However, I would categorize The Nightwatch as "large" but not "huge" and by European museum standards and there would also have to categories of "gigantic" and "super gigantic", or more refined European-sounding word variations thereof.

This image was recently licensed by a magazine in the Netherlands and has been licensed before for textbook use as well. It's odd to me that I have photographed a painting that I once studied in school and now my picture appears in other students' textbooks, but at least they will now have a sense of scale.

P.S. The next time I'll have to ask the museum if I could photograph it at night with the moon shining through the skylight. That would be freaky wouldn't it?

  • Thalys train at Gare du Nord station, Paris

I love Paris, and I think I get most excited when one of my pictures from Paris is licensed. The picture below is of the Thalys train at the Gare du Nord station in Paris. It was recently licensed for an advertising piece in the U.K. Is it drop-dead stunning? Admittedly no, but it worked for this client likely because of the combination of the clock, train in clear view (bright red at that), and the two travelers in the distance rolling with their luggage. Plus, it leaves a lot of room for text to be overlaid above and below. Picture of a high speed Thalys train at Gare du Nord station, Paris, France. Copyright Terry Smith. All Rights Reserved.

I'll soon be returning to Gare du Nord station when my wife and I take the Eurostar from London to Paris on an upcoming trip. It's officially a vacation and not a business-paid-for photo trip, but of course, I'll be taking tons of pictures as always! This will be my second time to London and fourth time to Paris. I've been doing a lot of mental planning on my shooting strategy. I have a set of subject matter I'm going to focus on that are not so much the top tourist locations: local markets and shops, shopping, etc. I've been fortune to have licensed many images from both London and Paris, but I hope to build more depth to my collection. • Venice, Italy

I recently updated the Venice, Italy photography gallery on my website. Please go check it out. This image below was created after I had been shooting gondoliers for awhile and wanted to do something beyond just a standard shot in order to capture the motion of the gondoliers and the gondolas. Fortunately, I had found a canal that was a popular gondolier hangout with gondolas passing by every few seconds. Southern Americans might equate this particular canal to their local Sonic Drive-In on a Friday or Saturday night. One of things I lucked out on was the combination of capturing the motion just as I intended and having a gondolier subject in the frame that was dressed, well, like a gondolier should be. If you've never been to Venice I don't want to spoil your idealized visions of it for you, but the truth is some gondoliers, certainly a minority, look more like teenagers at a Sonic Drive-In than gondoliers. This one though clearly has his gondolier wardrobe altogether. Copyright Terry Smith. All Rights Reserved.

  • Vernazza on the Cinque Terre, Italy

Vernazza is one of the most magical places in Italy. It's one of five sea-side (cliff-side more like it) villages that make-up the Cinque Terre. It's main economy is tourists these days, but the local fishermen still go out each good-weathered morning to keep up Vernazza's sea-faring heritage. Vernazza on the Cinque Terre in Italy. "This site is hosted on a dedicated server at Server Intellect. The people at Server Intellect are the most friendly, responsive, and knowledgeable support team I've ever dealt with (and I've been a dissatisfied customer at many different web server companies). Great features you would pay extra for elsewhere (like SSL VPN, a managed firewall, virus scans, data backup, and more) are all included for free. I couldn't recommend them more highly."
